Father and son rekindle bond by trash-talking mom

Local teen Scotty McLaughlin recently had a falling out with his father Richard McLaughlin after what Scott is calling a “totally not fleek” 16th birthday celebration.

“Yeah, it was fricken stupid,” Scott said. “I asked my dad, ‘Hey, can I bring one of your cases of Busch Light to my bonfire party tonight,’ and he told me no! Like, cut the fricken leash, dad, I’m not 15 anymore. Gosh dammit.”

Richard recalls the story in an unsurprisingly different way.

“Scott was told by his mother and me that he wasn’t allowed to go to the bonfire party a week ago because of his grades,” Richard said. “Nothing has changed.”

“No son of mine is going to be out partying on a school night with an A- in chemistry.”

Fortunately, despite their differences, some middle ground can still be found between the two.

“Yeah, sometimes pops can be a real drag, but when he rips into mom it’s fricken hilarious,” Scotty said.

Richard has taken note of his son’s malicious yet rare affection and he’s not going to let anything get in the way of salvaging the delicate relationship he has with his son.

Not even Michelle McLaughlin, his wife.

“Listen, Michelle and I have been bickering back and forth for years,” Richard said. “But she never says no to Scott, so I’ve basically win every argument now. It’s great!”

“One time, dad was like, ‘Michelle, make Scott and I some food! You are in the kitchen where you belong, right?’, and I fricken lost it,” Scotty recalled. “Dad and I high fived and kept watching TV until mom brought us some food. It was so funny.”

Despite the warm reunion, Michelle isn’t so pleased.

“I’d expect such terrible behavior from an immature 16 year old boy like my son,” Michelle said. “But Richard is just being selfish and manipulative like he’s always been. Oh, sure, he’s the funny cool dad for now, but he’s got another thing coming if he thinks he’s going to be the favorite parent in this house, because guess who’s dropping Scotty off at the bonfire tonight with a 24 pack of Busch Light?”
