Sbarro Fan Upset that Sbarro is Closing

After an 11 year run in the Nebraska Student Union, Sbarro is likely finally set to close its cage for good. But one student is not ready to accept the fate of his favorite restaurant.

“It’s not fair!” exclaims Ben Benson, a junior, and unsurprisingly the only person The DailyER could find that’s actually upset about the idea of Sbarro closing. “I knew Nebraska was my school after I got lunch on my visit, and I’ve eaten lunch here ever since. Where else on campus do they expect me to be able to get pizza every day?” It’s unclear if Ben is aware of the dining halls on campus.

While Sbarro offers a competitively priced menu (on average, $9/slice after you fail to convince them that paying extra for dipping sauce is ridiculous), and plenty of fresh, reheated-to-order items, they just can’t seem to make a positive impact on the student body.

When we asked for comment from Sbarro as to why they thought their store was about to close, they didn’t seem to have a clear answer.

“Don’t you think if we KNEW why people didn’t eat here, we would have fixed it a long time ago?” Sbarro manager Ken Smith politely responded. “Now are you going to order something or what?”

There are quite a few restaurants looking at the Union location, but Ben isn’t sure that whatever could replace Sbarro will replace the void in his life. In fact, he’s positive.

“There is no place like Sbarro!” Ben begins to sing-shout, glaring at the long line of students waiting to order Subway. It’s clear that the end of Sbarro’s run in the Union has been bothering him for some time, and as a result he has been bothering students since The Daily Nebraskan broke the news in September.

“I just don’t understand what they see in Subway that they don’t see in Sbarro. Who cares if they made their food 5 seconds ago instead of 5 hours ago, or that there’s more food, or that it’s less expensive, or that their food is actually supposed to be cold?”

Ben still isn’t sure what he’s going to do the rest of the year for lunch.

“I’m definitely considering my options. I didn’t have plans to be a commuter student this year, but I think the daily trip to Sbarro at Crossroads Mall is the best option that I have. I’m also looking at Sbarros around the UNO campus and potentially pursuing an online degree.”
