Husker Football rallies for massive comeback against Lincoln North Star JV

Lincoln, NE – Things were looking bleak for the Huskers on a cool night in Memorial Stadium.  The Gators of Lincoln North Star High School stormed out to a quick 14-0 lead, thanks to a 53 yard touchdown pass and a fumble in Nebraska territory.  Things didn’t seem to improve for the home team as fourteen year old, true freshman QB Edgar Dunahoo had a career day against the Blackshirts passing for 237 yards and 3 TD in the first half, putting the Gators up 28-7 at the half.

However, the momentum quickly shifted in favor of the home team as Husker saftey finally found a way through the tough O-line, stripping Dunahoo of the ball and returning it for an easy six points, chipping into the Gator lead, 28-13 (after the missed extra point), early in the third quarter.  On the ensuing kickoff the Nebraska special teams shanked an onside kick, resulting in short field position for Lincoln North Star JV.  The Nebraska defense stood strong and forced a quick three and out.

With the sea of red cheering him on, Casey Thompson put up points on three straight drives, putting the Huskers up 30-28 with 2 long touchdown passes and a 42 yard field goal.  However, in a strange turn of events, the game had to be called. According to a spokesperson from the Lincoln North Star JV team, the parents of many players had “called them home for dinner and they needed to be going to bed early with it being a school night”.  Several parents also had concerns about continuing play after Nebraska a edge tackle picked up RB James Ewers and threw him into the stands, resulting in a loss of 25 yards and several broken bones for Ewers.  After a short discussion the referees awarded the win to Nebraska.

After the game, interim head coach Mickey Joseph asserted “We’ve got a great group of guys in that locker room and I never once doubted them,” as he wiped sweat from his brow.  Nebraska returns to conference play as they’ll spend the next three weeks on the road, against Ohio State, Michigan and Ohio State again.
