With the fall semester coming to an end, students can look forward to a new option for their spring schedules. Blink 182 will be offered as a new course at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and students will be able to count the class as part of the ACE 7 curriculum. The class, which is more advanced than its pre-requisite, Blink 162, will take a look into questions such as “Where do we go from here?” and “What’s my age again?” while detailing the rich and illustrious history of the alternative band.
The new course’s professor, Kyle Jam, said he is amped to get started with his new curriculum and share his love for the band’s music.
“This tattoo right here says ‘All the Small Things,’ in Japanese,” Jam said, pointing to a series of symbols on his upper thigh. “And here’s a tattoo of Mark Hoppus’ face. I just think that he’s a lyrical genius.”
Lyrical genius, indeed. Jam said he plans for his students to study both the hits and deep cuts of his beloved band and find deeper meaning behind the band’s lyrics, such as “Late night, come home/Work sucks, I know,” as heard in the hit single, “All The Small Things.”
“I used to have a mohawk, so yeah, you could say I’m excited,” said senior mechanical engineer major, Craig White.
As for how Jam will teach Blink 182, he said he hopes to use both traditional and new methods.
“There’s going to be a lot of meditation, I think,” he said. “I also want the environment to just be really chill, but also I want everybody to be completely stoked. We’ll probably watch a lot of their videos and listen to their music. What else can I do? Do you have suggestions? Because I seriously don’t know how to teach.”
