The beloved UNL Dairy Store, located in the Food Industry Complex on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus, will soon be debuting a new flavor of its popular homespun ice cream: Swiss Mushroom Runza.
“We’re proud to announce that a new flavor of our classic handmade ice cream will soon be added to the Dairy Store dip cabinet,” reported Kyle Delgado, general manager of the UNL Dairy Store.
“In addition to our beloved classics like Bavarian Mint and Scarlet & Cream, we will now be offering Swiss Mushroom Runza ice cream. I expect it will become an instant favorite for everyone in the UNL community, Dairy Store regulars and visitors alike,” Delgado added.
The new ice cream, which, like the other time-honored flavors in the Dairy Store’s regular rotation, can be served in a cake cone, waffle cone or dish, and will include every ingredient of the classic Runza sandwich, including ground beef, shredded cabbage, tender mushrooms, and creamy Swiss cheese.
“We anticipate that customers will love the extra richness the Swiss cheese will add to our already creamy confections,” Delgado explained. “The ice cream will also feature bite-sized chunks of actual Runza dough, adding to the authenticity of the Swiss Mushroom Runza ice cream experience.”
The new ice cream flavor, which will be added to the Dairy Store’s seasonal rotation, will be served beginning this summer. Though it will be served only in the store’s dip cabinet, for now, Delgado confirmed that the Dairy Store is looking to begin serving a soft-serve version of the dessert as soon as next fall.
“Unfortunately, the chunky shredded cabbage keeps clogging up our soft-serve machines, but we should be able to get the issue sorted out shortly,” Delgado explained. “Hopefully, we’ll even be able to get the flavor added to the regular dessert menu at Cather Dining in time to welcome next year’s freshman class!”
Despite repeated questioning, reporters were unable to confirm nor debunk rumors that the Dairy Store will be adding Valentino’s Garlic Twisted Breadstick flavored ice cream to its menu in the near future.
