In the aftermath of a catastrophic loss amongst Hispanic voters last November, GOP lawmakers have expressed a new interest in courting the key voting bloc, an effort they have dismissed in the past. At the forefront of this movement is Republican senator and Cuban-American Marco Rubio.
Hailing from Florida, Rubio is well versed in the trials and tribulations that often define the modern Hispanic person in America. It is because of this that the Republican Party views Rubio as a bridge towards a more inclusive party.
“Marco knows Hispanics very well,” claimed Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus. “I swear, everytime I see him it’s tacos this, tacos that, yada yada español.”
Rubio has a reputation as a great orator, which has led the Republican party to believe that he could be their version of Barack Obama.
“Everybody knows that the only problem with the Republican party is that they only ever have old white men deliver their message,” claimed former Republican nominee for President, Mitt Romney. “It’s just like I told all those old white people at my fundraiser in Boca Raton, if I was Mexican I probably would be the president right now.”
The sentiment found a slight amount of legitimacy with Florida resident and Obama voter Francisco Montoya. “Don’t get me wrong, I distrust white people as much as the other guy, but I don’t trust just any brown person either.”
“But if you were to wake me up in the middle of the night and ask if I’d vote for a fellow Hispanic, I’d say yeah.”
Montoya followed up that statement by asking what Rubio’s views on evolution, abortion, taxes, health care, entitlement programs, and the role of government spending.
Rubio is making waves throughout the Spanish-speaking world by committing himself to give the Republican response to the State of the Union address in Spanish.
“The fact that he’s willing to speak another language on camera means he’s not your typical Republican,” claimed Republican strategist Karl Rove. “Next thing you know, Rubio is going to be giving out Doritos Locos Tacos at all of his campaign rallies.”
Rubio did not disagree with Rove’s statements. His only public response was to utter one phrase: “Yo quiero Taco Bell.”
