In a rare crowd-pleasing announcement, Governor Dave Heineman stated his plans to freeze tuition at all Nebraska state colleges and universities on Friday. When asked how he plans to pay for the $50 million proposal, Heineman stated that he was “pretty sure” the revenue could be raised by cutting taxes.
“Everyone knows that when you lower taxes, the government actually gains more in revenue,” a possibly drunk Heineman proclaimed. “I think if we eliminated the state income tax entirely, we would be flush with revenue.”
The move comes after a long line of questionable Heineman budget plans. Just last year the governor proposed a $327 million tax cut without providing any guidelines for how to make up for that lost revenue.
“This is vintage Heineman,” noted a totally peeved State Senator Jeremy Nordquist. “He sure loves proposing high-cost budget items without presenting a single cut to pay for them.”
However, looming unfunded budget proposals couldn’t dampen the mood throughout the UNL community. “This is some good shit,” said local stoner and UNL philosophy major Paul Schafer. “This is gonna save me a couple hundred dollars a year. Do you know how much weed that buys me? Enough to get me through finals week again.”
Not only are students pleased with the news that they will not be paying more for school the next two years, but the nation’s tax reform advocates are happy as well. “Governor Heineman is a bold reformer,” said a visibly giddy Grover Nordquist of Americans for Tax Reform. “I’ve been saying for years that politicians need to start paying for things by cutting taxes. It’s just good to finally see twenty years of hard work pay off in Nebraska.”
