A wonderful horror movie to get your skin crawling underneath that revealing Halloween costume is Alien. Part science fiction AND part horror, this tale is about a spaceship crew going off the beaten path that is their route back home when a strange beacon is sent from a desolate planet. Upon getting to the planet, the crew finds nothing good. In fact, something bad is brought back: A terrifying alien creature, which proceeds to terrorize the entire crew. For me, the mixture of suspense as well as a unique sci fi setting, original creature design, and a plot that isn’t lame or cheesy is what makes this a Halloween classic.

This 1982 sci-fi horror stars Kurt Russell as an Antarctic helicopter pilot struggling to survive while the scientific team around him is consumed by a mysterious alien “Thing,” a creature which no doubt spells the end of humanity if allowed to leave the cold. The central hook of the story, that the monster can and will take over the body of any scientist if allowed to is a great one, and leads to several incredible scenes as the crew waits for the monster to expose itself as one of their former friends. This whole thing would fall apart if it wasn’t for Rob Bottin’s outstanding creature effect work which disgusts over 30 years later. A chilling score by Carpenter and Ennio Morricone’s slowly ratchets up the movie’s sense of dread, escalating a simple monster movie into a horrifying classic.

Whoever said Halloween films had to be scary? If you are not into the horror genre and have basically been living under a rock your entire life, you should check out It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Created by the late-great Charles M. Schulz, this animated special was first released in 1966 and has been shown annually on ABC for what seems like forever. Great Pumpkin follows Charlie Brown’s unsuccessful quest trick-or-treating and Linus’ attempt to find the Great Pumpkin. It may not be the most memorable of all the Peanuts holiday specials, but it still captures the heart and soul we all feel during these holiday times.
