The Nebraska athletic department unveiled a plan Tuesday to move the university’s football team to a brand-new stadium in Los Angeles for the upcoming 2016 season.
“We’ve been following recent team moves in the NFL and the athletic department realized if we’re going to provide a professional-quality experience for our student-athletes, we just can’t stay in Lincoln, Nebraska,” said athletic director Shawn Eichorst. “I know that some of our fans are concerned about being able to get to the games, but we have to put the student-athletes and the athletic department administrators first.”
Husker fans worried that home games would not be the same outside Memorial Stadium, but applauded the athletic department’s idea to build a new stadium directly on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“You know, I always loved telling all my friends in other parts of the country that Memorial Stadium is the third largest city in the state of Nebraska,” said longtime Husker fan Harold Jackson. “It’s just not a very interesting fact that our new stadium is the 79th largest city in the state of California.”
Students have expressed interest in the university’s plans to raze Memorial Stadium and replace it with the new Extra-Innovative Campus. The Extra-Innovative Campus will include features essential to digital startups including unwashed hooded sweatshirts and conveniently located Red Bull dispensers.
Sources within the athletic department indicated the snowy winters in Lincoln also contributed to the decision to move, as staffers were concerned that football players could be injured using their hoverboards in the wintry conditions.
The athletic department has yet to give details as to how student-athletes will travel across two time zones each day to attend classes but reminded The DailyER that the “student” part of “student-athlete” is really more of a recommendation than a requirement.
