In a stunning move that rocked the college sports landscape, Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst announced a revamped mascot lineup featuring three sizes of Red.
“Starting today, Medium Red and Large Red will join Lil’ Red as the latest characters in the Husker mascot lineup,” Eichorst said at a Monday press conference. “Now, for the first time ever, fans can choose the Red that fits their lifestyle.”
As Eichorst flipped through slides revealing the new designs, audience members watched in awe, already thinking about which Red would match their personality.
Mascot analyst Jim Williamson speculated that the announcement could cause a paradigm shift across the nation.
“This sends a strong message to colleges everywhere that a one-size-fits-all mascot experience is no longer acceptable,” Williamson said. “Fans have demanded customizable mascot choices, and the University of Nebraska delivered.”
All across campus, students were abuzz with excitement over the new Red options.
“I’ve always loved Lil’ Red, but I’m kind of a big guy, so he just feels a bit too lil’,” said sophomore psychology major Josh Jackson. “Large Red might be too large, so Medium Red is probably the perfect fit for me. But my dad? He’s going to be a Large Red man for sure.”
Not all fans were impressed, including junior marketing major Lisa Anderson. “They pretty much just took the Lil’ Red design and made it bigger, so it’s not very original,” Anderson said. “And why did they call him ‘Large Red’ instead of ‘Big Red?’”
Despite the criticism, Eichorst isn’t backing down. “These new Reds are the result of thousands of hours of work by our research and design teams,” he explained.
“When you’re on the cutting edge of innovation, not everyone will be happy. But we’re confident that we’ve made the right moves to satisfy Husker fans of all sizes.”
