Football fans, rejoice!
After a wildly successful Super Bowl LII in Minnesota that shattered several records, the National Football League has announced huge plans to move next year’s Super Bowl LIII from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, to Cook Pavilion, located right next to the Campus Recreation Center on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s city campus.
“This is an exciting day for our players, coaching staff and, most importantly, the fans,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Lincoln, Nebraska, is one of the best places to host a football game and what better place than historic Cook Pavilion? With such a great history of the game and a great facility to hold the Super Bowl in, there was no way we could have turned down the idea of playing the championship here.”
The move has received mostly positive feedback from the Lincoln community. “Finally, some postseason football in Nebraska! ” said Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos. “Things really have turned around for the city of Lincoln since Scott Frost came to town. Our volleyball team has won a title, our men’s basketball team has more than 10 wins and now we’re hosting a Super Bowl?! Now is definitely a great time to be a Husker fan!”
But not everyone shared the same excitement to move the Super Bowl to Cook Pavilion.
“Why can’t they have it somewhere else?” asked UNL junior and nutrition major, Kelly Birdsall, who regularly uses the Cook Pavilion field for workouts. “That’s going to mess up the Sunday night jogging session I usually do in Cook. Ugh.”
NFL Commissioner Goodell announced that all twelve tickets for next year’s Super Bowl have already sold out. Those looking to watch the Super Bowl can either watch the broadcast on FOX or peer through the windows on the second floor of the rec center.
