On April 1, 2015, Harvey Perlman announced his resignation from the position of Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, effective after the 2015-2016 academic school year, “for a variety of reasons, both personal and professional.”
Among his professional reasons is the beginning of a historic presidential campaign bid.
Despite the unfortunate choice of date to announce this news, his letter to students and staff is real. Perlman meant it to be an homage to the start of his tenure as chancellor in 2001, but some are still speculating about the possibility of his entire tenure being a long-running April Fool’s joke as well.
Perlman expressed wishes to retire from his position with the University “quietly and without fanfare” in order to prepare for the raucous rallies to be held in Memorial Stadium.
With Nebraska icon and legendary football coach Tom Osborne as vice president, Perlman appears to be the most promising independent candidate to surface for the 2016 elections yet, with a 100% favorable rating throughout Husker Nation.
Perlman, 73, is one of the oldest candidates in the field, but he shows a special connection with younger crowds through his use of Twitter and other social media platforms.
The official campaign announcement came in an episode of his Youtube series, “Perls of Knowledge.”
Perlman suggest that the series could be retooled when he makes it to the White House, in the same vein as President Franklin Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats.
“’Perls of Knowledge’ is a great way to reach the UNL community, and I think they will work very well for the entire country as well,” Perlman said.
Perlman has been chancellor of UNL for the past 14 years. During his tenure he has worked on a variety of projects and initiatives to improve the university, many of which he believes will work on a larger scale as well.
Rumors have began circulating that Perlman will seek a population increase by 2020 when in office, with hopes to reach 400 million citizens in the United States.
Additional speculation includes plans that, if elected, Perlman may also bring the traditions of his treasured Innocents Society along with him to the presidency, transforming the role of the Secret Service.
Campaign budgets show plans to purchase hundreds of new cloaks and sunglasses over the next several months.
