Following Senior United States District Judge Joseph Bataillon’s ruling on Nebraska’s ban on gay marriage, Governor Pete Ricketts’ love life became quite a bit more complicated.

Ricketts’ boyfriend, Steve Kandor, isn’t excited about his lover’s negative reaction to the ruling, but is thrilled this will give them a chance to marry.

“This is just like him,” Kandor said. “Always acting like he’s not gay until he’s around his boyfriend, then ignoring me for stretches. Last week, he promised he’d marathon through ‘Sex and the City’ with me this past weekend.”

“Guess who ended up hanging out with Carrie and the gang alone?” he asked rhetorically.

Kandor said he’s excited for things to change now that gay marriage is close in Nebraska.

“We’re going to get married,” he said. “We’re going to get gay married to each other.”

Ricketts has been more distant since the ruling, Kandor said, but that’s “just him.”

“I used to think he hated me because he was embarrassed by me,” Kandor said. “I figured he would shame-cry every time we kissed and that would be that, but I’ve learned he’s just a gentle soul who hasn’t found his footing in this world quite yet.”

“Not that he’s stopped shame-crying, mind you,” he added.

Ricketts has only spoken briefly about his relationship with Kandor.

“Boyfriend?” he asked. “If dreaming frequently and envisioning a future with someone makes them your boyfriend, then yeah, I guess he’s my boyfriend. It’s not like I fantasize about him that often. I definitely do not want to marry him and live a life full of bliss and memories.”

He went on, discussing the way he’s acted recently.

“I guess the reason I treat him the way I do is because I have a reputation to uphold,” he said. “The only thing that matters is the persona I’ve built of intolerance and money mattering more than anything. But now that gay marriage is on the table, things may change between us. We’ll see.”
