Reminder: In an emergency, call UNLPD, not Husker Heroes

The DailyER has an important and necessary reminder for UNL: despite its heroic name, Husker Heroes is not the service to call during an emergency situation.

Husker Heroes, the beloved grab-and-go sandwich shop located in the Willa Cather Dining Complex, serves both hot and cold hoagies as well as soup, chips and fresh fruit. Despite convenient hours and location, the university community should be aware that Husker Heroes employees lack both the training and equipment to respond to emergency situations.

“The mission of our grab-and-go sandwich locations is to provide a convenient made-to-order lunch option for busy students. We have no plans to begin providing law enforcement services in the near future,” a Dining Services spokesperson said.

The spokesperson was unable to comment on how many emergency-related calls the sub shop had received recently.

A representative from the UNL Police Department also weighed in on the confusion: “The UNLPD is prepared to handle any urgent situation that may arise on or around the UNL campus. Emergency calls should come straight to us, 24/7.”

“No meal plan is required to report a dangerous situation,” the representative added.

Members of the student body voiced some confusion over the ambiguity.

“I think it creates a potentially dangerous situation,” affirmed UNL student Jessica Thomas. “If someone needs to be rescued, the obvious thing to do is call a hero. How are we supposed to know that this sub shop only sells sandwiches?”

Despite the confusion, the Husker Heroes representative remained adamant that the sandwich shop would not change its name. “Husker Subs? Scarlet and Cheese? I think we can agree, nothing else sounds right.”
