Senior Day is finally here for Nebraska men’s basketball! Coming off a terrific season that will most likely end in a postseason berth, Nebraska basketball shows no signs of stopping when Penn State rolls into Lincoln for the final game of the season today. Although most fans attending Pinnacle Bank Arena for the game today are expecting a tribute to the senior basketball players, followed by an exciting game of hoops, this is not the case for Senior Day 2018. This year, 15,000 loyal Husker fans will get to witness a high-stakes cribbage match between the Huskers and Nittany Lions.
“This year, we wanted to embrace the true meaning of Senior Day,” said Husker hoops head coach Tim Miles. “My father loves to play cribbage and his father was also a huge cribbage player. A lot of the Husker fan base is elderly, and what better way to pay tribute to them than to hold a cribbage match!”
Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany spoke highly of the decision for Nebraska and Penn State to play a cribbage match instead of basketball. “I commend these two teams for making the game switch,” said Delany. “I mean, anyone really can dribble a ball and throw up a few shots. It’s not that hard. But it takes a special mind to compete at a high level in cribbage. That stuff is way above my pay grade. I’m extremely proud of this decision and hope other teams in the Big Ten and around the country start this tradition.”
Tim Miles has been coaching the Nebraska basketball team all week on cribbage in preparation for the showdown later today. “This scoring system is impossible,” said junior point guard Glynn Watson, Jr. “I’m so used to a free throw being 1 point, inside the arc is 2 points and outside the arc is 3 points. Now it seems like points are just being made up for no reason. If I have to deal with any more of this cribbage stuff, I’m transferring.”
