The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ spring football game provided fans with a thrilling glimpse of what to expect in the upcoming season. But, The DailyER we spotted eight glaring mistakes that Coach Mike Riley needs to fix before the season starts.
- They began by playing baseball. The Huskers got off to a rough start when they took the field in full baseball gear. After several calls of “play football” from the crowd, Coach Riley called a timeout to get things sorted out, but not before quarterback Tommy Armstrong recorded three strikeouts.
- They only played against themselves. For the entirety of the spring game, the Huskers only played against a team also composed of the Huskers’ own players. According to reports, none of the Huskers’ 2016 games are scheduled against themselves, so they’ll need to get this figured out too.
- They played the entire second quarter horizontally. The players misunderstood the instructions to “switch sides of the field” after the first quarter, and rotated 90 degrees rather than a full 180. While the Huskers did score more touchdowns this way, this is the kind of error that Big Ten officials are not going to let slide.
- They didn’t let me bring my beer into the stadium. This one is just obvious. I’m sure Coach Riley and his staff will fix this issue by the time the season starts.
- They put the playbook on the north stadium video screen. While this did help the players know which play to run, it could also help opposing teams, who could potentially also look up at the 4000-square-foot screen. Also, the playbook looked suspiciously similar to the video game “Madden NFL 16”, and it appeared that whoever was controlling it was just pressing the “Ask Madden” button every time.
- The stadium contained numerous feral bee hives. To maximize the gameday experience, the Huskers should try to reduce the number of feral bee hives in the stadium, preferably to zero.
- They doused Coach Riley with Gatorade after every play. While it may have boosted team spirit, this significantly slowed the pace of the game and put a major strain on the university’s beverage budget. The players should be instructed to limit coach-Gatorade-dousing to the winning of conference and/or national championships.
- The players’ shoes kept coming untied. Coach Riley should tell his players to lace those shoes up tight!
