University of Nebraska-Lincoln students can celebrate Halloween in a new way this year, as the technology department announced Monday it will be providing every student with a free spooky clipart CD-ROM.
“We’re so excited to be giving students over 1500 spooky ghosts, skeletons, witches and pumpkins for their documents and PowerPoint presentations,” said UNL technology director Rich Morrison. “It’s our way of saying ‘Happy Halloween.’”
The disc, titled “Halloween Clipart Galaxy 2000,” is the result of a licensing agreement between UNL and Blitz Software Inc. It is reportedly compatible with computers running Windows 95 and up.
In August, the university gave students free access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud, which includes Photoshop and InDesign. Morrison hopes the Halloween-themed CD-ROM will be an even bigger hit.
“After the Adobe software launch was a success, a clipart CD-ROM seemed like the next logical step,” Morrison explained.
As Halloween spirit swept across campus, students were thrilled (and chilled) by the news.
“I can’t want to put some spooky skeletons in my next paper,” said freshman English major Amanda Dowling as she examined the back of the disc case. “Some of these are a little too scary, though. I don’t want to scare my professor into giving me a bad grade.”
Staff members at the Daily Nebraskan, UNL’s student newspaper, were also excited.
“This is going to be our most popular issue in years,” said lead designer Greg Martinez, as he strategically positioned a spooky spider in the middle of the front page.
Other students were less enthused, like junior finance major Michael Gilbert.
“My laptop doesn’t have a CD-ROM drive,” Gilbert said.
