Album: John Mayer | Paradise Valley
Paradise Valley is worth mentioning however past due it may be to do so. Mayer’s August release is a good listen while driving, cooking or doing anything, really. It also is arguably John Mayer’s best album yet, which certainly is a statement with weight. The album is without question Mayer’s most mature, developed and complex sound. Paradise Valley breathes America. It brings together Mayer’s core acoustic background with classic blues elements as well as some twangy, folky sounds. The album is solidly good all the way through and merits being put on repeat.

Album: Windhand | Soma
It’s not easy to derive enjoyment from bleak music. If done right, the songs should create unease, distrust, and general anxiety. Soma, the new records of atmospheric doom group Windhand, can best be compared to a good horror film. Slow, sparse, and occasionally angry, the entire album drips with theatrics. You know it isn’t necessarily real, but you enjoy every second of it, and it comes back to you when you least expect it.
Release Date: Sept 17. Windhand plays the Bourbon on Sept 25.

Album: King Khan and the Shrines | Idle No More
King Khan is back with the Shrines after five long years since The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines. The singer/guitarist returns with his nine fellow band members with crazy names to go along with the band’s namesake. Mr. Speedfinger is the lead guitarist, Boom Boom Jennes is on the bass… you see where this is going. These guys are garage rock and funk at its finest. The filthy guitars and playful lyrics blend beautifully with brassy horns and a dancey beat into one sweaty, fun fusion.

Film: Moonrise Kingdom
Wes Anderson’s eccentric directorial flair shines through in this offbeat romantic comedy following two young children as they flee into the wilderness to allow their own romantic relationship to flourish. Set to the backdrop of an historic coastal storm, Moonrise Kingdom paces itself masterfully through rising action towards the peak climax with the help of A-list actors like Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and more. Fans of the director’s style cannot afford to miss this, while newcomers are sure to be enthralled as well.

Film: Reservoir Dogs
One of Quentin Tarantino’s earlier films, Reservoir Dogs still holds up to this day for its compelling storyline and unique characters. Chronicling a group of gangsters dealing with the fallout of a heist-gone-wrong, the film truly shines through its nuanced and in depth character development as the once organized and tight knit group of criminals begin to turn on each other and everyone’s motives are questioned. Seriously, don’t call yourself a Tarantino fan unless you’ve seen this movie.
