All-male a cappella rendition of Hallelujah saves campus holding on by a thread

Wednesday, February 2 was a bitter day: the weather kept people’s fingers cold and faces shivering under masks that were not doing enough to protect them on campus. COVID-19 cases were at an all-time high, and so many courses did not have an online option. It had been more than a month since Betty White died, more than a month since the start of 2022. One month into the year of the tiger, and students hardly have any fight left. Then, the gloomy sky opened up, and the sun broke out. The preppy young men of the Sink Puppies, UNL’s favorite boys next door, descended on a cloud in front of the Union where they gave an impromptu show to onlookers, pedestrians, and the bible lady on the steps.

Starting with the quiet sounding of the pitch pipe, the show began. Humming from their throats and “doo doo’s” from their moisturized lips opened the song. Their peach fuzz chins bobbed up and down as they established the melody.

A member with the voice of an angel. Bobby Sebastian, sang with the passion of a million summer suns: “I’ve heard there was a secret chord…that David played and it pleased the Lord…” Sebastian opened the ears, eyes, and hearts of every witness and witness of a witness. His angelic lyrics would be heard all the way on East Campus, where the cows mooed at the heartfelt message.

Everyone smiled, and for four and half minutes, everything was okay. We could get through today, and we could crash an a cappella party on a Friday night and see what else those mouths can do.
