Phi Kappa Psi fraternity has received some bad publicity in recent days due to a video which reportedly contained evidence of hazing. The video in question allegedly showed a student, understood to be a pledge of the fraternity, being branded with the fraternity’s Greek letters. In light of this news chapter president Francis Gobbles gave a press conference today on what the chapter plans to do to prevent further instances of hazing.
“In order to prevent any further [branding] we are going to build a half-acre fenced-in pasture in order for the pledges to graze freely,” Gobbles said when asked what steps he would personally take in achieving his goals of preventing further hazing practices. He believes that such a pasture would keep pledges from having to be branded because the pledges won’t “wander in front of other houses” leaving them vulnerable to being stolen by rival fraternity houses.
“We have seen the error of our ways,” Gobbles said. “We know now that branding a person is bad and we hope these provision that we have laid out will prevent further bodily harm to future pledges.”
While Gobbles seemed pleased with the fence plan, it left other members of the university with more questions than answers.
“Many people still have several concerns with the fraternity’s decision to build a fence,” University HR Directory Jenaveve Stern told The DailyER. “For instance, how would they protect the pledges against bandits? Would the pledges also be given a barn to sleep in? How many pledges do they intend would graze on the pasture at one time?”
