Nebraska Offensive Coordinator Shawn Watson said he hopes that the zone read call is a nice little surprise for the defense in the upcoming weeks.
“I know I’ve already called it 35 times per game, but seriously — what defensive coach would possibly think I’d run it again?” Watson said. “I mean, it hasn’t worked all game. It’s the perfect call.”
Head coach Bo Pelini agreed, saying it was way better than the alternative.
“At least the ball stays in someone’s hands this time. If I have to watch Niles (Paul) drop a ball again, I might quit right there,” Pelini said. “And a run play also runs out the clock. The less time our offense has to play, the better it is for all the Nebraska fans out there.”
Watson said he will continue to call the zone read until it fails the team.
“Right now we have no reason not to call it. We’re on the verge of really surprising them this time,” Watson said.
