The University Health Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will soon begin offering free STD exams to students over the video conferencing platform Zoom, the Health Center announced Friday.
“Beginning next week, students will be able to schedule virtual STD checks with our team of experienced medical professionals,” explained Health Center director Dr. Lawrence Thornton. “We’re excited to begin offering distanced screenings for HPV, chlamydia, and genital warts.”
DailyER staff had the opportunity to interview one of the students who helped to pilot the virtual STD exam experience.
“It was an interesting experience,” explained sophomore biology major Drew Myers. “The doctor told me most things looked good, but he couldn’t tell if a little spot was just a blip on screen or actually herpes,” Myers said while scratching a sore on his lip.
Students using the service need not worry about their virtual privacy, according to Dr. Thornton.
“Recordings of our virtual STD appointments will only be shared among all the doctors and nurses on staff as well as all of our student workers as necessary for training and/ or entertainment purposes,” explained Dr. Thornton. “Although it is possible that our most exemplary, STD-free images of student genitals could be used for a campus-wide safe sex campaign in the near future.”
Although there is no word yet on how many students will use the service, demand for the Health Center’s upcoming Zoom mammograms is expected to be high.
